Johnny Depp's opinion on next film:

"It boils down to story, script and filmmaker. It's not something where I would say, 'Let's shoot it next month to get it out by Christmas 2012.' We should hold off for a bit. They should be special, just like they are special to me."

Upcoming Filming

"Disney has begun quietly telling cast and crew to set aside a major block of time in the very near future so they can shoot Pirates 5 and Pirates 6. And, yes, once again, they will be shooting them back-to-back as one giant film, and then they'll release them as two films," Drew McWeeny said. Of course, there's the minor issue of co-ordinating the cast and crew's schedules (with Depp now attached to The Lone Ranger, there could be issues), and there's always the fear that they could burn out and replicate the overbaked mess of Dead Man's Chest and At World's End.

Ride History

Pirates of the Caribbean Walt Disney World Ride Entrance

Like all of the rides and attractions created before the 1970s at the Disney amusment parks, Pirates first began as an idea in the creative mind of Walt Disney.

It was originally planned to be a walk-through pirate museum featuring famous pirates from history, but it was the creation of audio-animatronics that inspired Disney to make the attraction a ride-through so the guests could better interact with the pirates.

Audio-Animatronics

In case the word is foreign, audio-animatronics are robotic figures that are built to imitate real, human (or animal) motion, so the more lifelike the better! It was a technology dreamed up by Disney himself and created by talented Imagineers: the creative minds behind the Disney magic!

Although many new technologies have bumped audio-animatronics down a few notches in the past decades, it was considered high-tech in the 1960s.Pirates of the Caribbean Ride

The first Disneyland attraction to use this technology was the Enchanted Tiki Room, but by the time Pirates came along, audio-animatronic technology had really come a long way.

Pirate Design

Imagineers first sketched intentionally humorous pirates and scenes, and then built models of the ride with very detailed 9" figures of each character. The miniature sets and character figures helped them visualise what they were putting together.

In an old-school version of motion-capture, actors were cast in the parts of various pirates, and they would perform their pirate character's motions and then be filmed. The engineers would then watch the films and use them as reference for the animatronic's movements.

As for transportation, they decided to go with the boat float-through to carry the guests because it had worked so well on the "Small World" ride, which had premiered at the 1964'/65' World's Fair.

The Show Goes On

In a most tragic twist of fate, Walt Disney died of lung cancer from smoking before Pirates even opened. But the Imagineers pressed on through their sadness, still striving to make Pirates the amazing ride they planned, worthy of Walt's legacy.

Many years later we are still adoring those salty old pirates, and we are still humming the catchy "Yo Ho" theme music by George Bruns and X. Atencio.

The ride originally inspired the movie and now the movie inspires the ride. They added Captain Jack Sparrow throughout the ride and more people than ever want to come see the real life deal.
